The City has already cut back its vehicle fleet by 30 per cent over the past five years, and added more than 40 hybrid cars and 20 diesel-electric trucks, with another 10 due later in the year. These initiatives have helped save up to 30 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions for each vehicle.

Furthermore, another 84 council vehicles including garbage trucks, road sweepers, foot way cleaners and steam cleaning trucks have been fitted with environmentally friendly exhaust systems and filters in order to produce less greenhouse gas emissions.

City of Sydney Director of Operations Garry Harding said Council was on track to reduce CO2 emissions from its vehicles by 20 per cent by 2014.

Other plans to be adopted by the council include using sustainable biofuels, which combine diesel with recycled cooking oil, animal fat and canola, to power trucks, and servicing parks, footpaths and providing eco-driving training programs which help our drivers understand the impact of vehicle emissions and teach them low-emission driving techniques.
