The funding, sourced from an Environmental Protection Agency landfill levy, will support the implementation of the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Strategic Plan.
The Metropolitan Waste Management Group will carry out the Plan and has legislated responsibility to work with 30 metropolitan councils, covering the area where 70 percent of Victoria's waste is generated.
Under the Plan, to local government capacity to offer more affordable and sustainable waste services to communities will be instigated.
Chair of the Metropolitan Waste Management Group, Councillor Heinz Kreutz, said it was important that councils are supported in their efforts to promote recycling and reduce reliance on landfill.
